We are a group of like-minded Thunder Bay residents who have mobilized in an effort to preserve urban greenspaces while supporting urban development in the right places in Thunder Bay.

One of our first objectives is the preservation of three greenspaces that the City of Thunder Bay is targeting for mass development:

  • 791 Arundel St – this parcel is zoned “Community”, a zoning designation used for parks and public recreation areas. It does not allow residential building.
  • 300 Tokio St – this parcel is zoned “Urban Mid-rise”. The entire parcel contains a stand of mature trees, an urban forest vital for mitigating the effects of climate change. It’s the last large stand of mature trees along Junot Ave S in the Forest Park neighbourhood.
  • 144 Fanshaw St – this parcel is zoned “Urban Low-rise”. Like Tokio St, the entire parcel contains a stand of mature trees, an urban forest vital for mitigating the effects of climate change. The Urban Low-rise zoning designation does not allow the type development being proposed.

The City has many parcels of land that would be better suited for development and densification. In fact, the City even commissioned a report that provides a list of those parcels. Selling our greenspaces, although easier and quicker for developers, does not result in a more viable and healthy environment for Thunder Bay to grow into the future.
