TBay Greenspace Preservation aims at doing everything possible to protect and preserve greenspace in Thunder Bay for future generations. Our greenspaces are being threatened by City planners, private developers, federal and provincial policies, while our physical and mental health depends on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, in November 2025, the City of Thunder Bay came out with a proposal for development of four locations: 144 Fanshaw Street, 300 Tokio Street, 791 Arundel St and 211-223 Tupper St. & 224 Camelot St. three of which would see the destruction of greenspaces forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TBay Greenspace Preservation is about protecting ALL green spaces in Thunder Bay, not just the ones which are being targeted now. We see these proposals as a part of a dangerous trend and we’re committed to ALL greenspaces as we know that they are essential to sustainability, biodiversity, physical and mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, the accessibility by foot of some of our greenspace must be accounted for, as it is an extremely important asset for some individuals with limited income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The destruction of greenspace is contrary to the Climate-Forward City: Thunder Bay Net-Zero Strategy. Urban forests and greenspaces are vital to our city’s climate resiliency. The Strategy calls for the planting of 100,000 trees within the municipal boundary by 2050. It’s fiscally and environmentally irresponsible to remove matures trees that provide carbon sequestration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We believe that the need for housing our municipality faces CAN be met without infringing upon existing greenspace, that we\u2019re not faced with a \u201cdevelopment versus preservation\u201d dilemma as some have stated. As the City of Thunder Bay considers housing densification, greenspaces are offered to the chopping block. Residents are divided between preserving greenspaces or addressing housing as competing priorities. Should people have to choose? Instead of impacting neighbourhoods negatively, development can happen where neighbourhoods need revitalization and where supporting infrastructure and facilities already exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can help by writing City councilors and the mayor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explain to them how you feel about greenspace in general, and about the ones slated for development in particular: 791 Arundel Street, 144 Fanshaw Street and 300 Tokio Street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We plan on using donations to buy signs, and to cover the cost of our FB page and website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
