Our parkland and greenspaces are being threatened by City Council, City planners, private developers, federal and provincial policies, while our physical and mental health depends on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, in November 2025, the City of Thunder Bay announced proposals for high-density apartment developments of four locations: 144 Fanshaw St, 300 Tokio St, 791 Arundel St, and 211-223 Tupper St. &amp; 224 Camelot St.  The development at 791 Arundel St would see the destruction of 7.82 acres of parkland, part of the Boulevard Lake Complex. The developments at 144 Fanshaw St and 300 Tokio St would destroy mature urban forests. These greenspaces will be lost forever. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TBay Greenspace Preservation is about protecting ALL parkland, including greenspaces in Thunder Bay, not just the ones which are being targeted now. We see these proposals as a part of a dangerous trend and we&#8217;re committed to ALL parkland and greenspaces as we know that they are essential to sustainability, biodiversity, physical and mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, the accessibility by foot of some of our neighbourhood parkland and greenspaces must be accounted for, as it is an extremely important asset for some individuals with limited income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The destruction of parkland and greenspace is contrary to the Climate-Forward City: Thunder Bay Net-Zero Strategy. Urban forests and greenspaces are vital to our city&#8217;s climate resiliency. The Strategy calls for the planting of 100,000 trees within the municipal boundary by 2050. It&#8217;s fiscally and environmentally irresponsible to remove matures trees that provide carbon sequestration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We believe that the need for housing our municipality faces CAN be met without infringing upon existing greenspace, that we\u2019re not faced with a \u201cdevelopment versus preservation\u201d dilemma as some have stated. As the City of Thunder Bay considers housing densification, parkland and greenspaces are offered to the chopping block. Residents are divided between preserving parkland and greenspaces or addressing housing as competing priorities. Should people have to choose? Instead of impacting neighbourhoods negatively, development can happen where neighbourhoods need revitalization and where supporting infrastructure and facilities already exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can help by writing City councilors and the mayor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Explain to them how you feel about their decision to target parkland and greenspaces for surplus in order to billd high-density market-rate apartment complexes or other developments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We plan on using donations to buy signs, and
