For more information on who was elected, please check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/thunderbay.enrs.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thunder Bay 2026 Municipal &amp; School Board Election site.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We continue to focus our attention on protecting greenspace, especially parkland that has been used for decades by city residents for public recreation. If you&#8217;re new to the site, we recommend you review our articles and especially our <a href=\"https:\/\/tbaygreenspacepreservation.ca\/?cat=18\" data-type=\"category\" data-id=\"18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Recent News and Publications<\/a>. You will learn how City Council (2022-2026) targeted parkland, working hand in hand with developers to determine how and where our City will grow and develop. You will discover that the voices of thousands of residents were ignored and the deputations of concerned residents were referred to as &#8220;NIMBY arguments&#8221;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although there&#8217;s a new mix of city councillors starting November 15th, councillors Etreni, Hamilton, Aiello, Johnsen, Foulds, and Bentz are returning. Only one of those councillors, Foulds, voted against rezoning the parkland at 791 Arundel St. The other five will undoubtedly continue to offer up our parkland to development. Our fight to save greenspaces, and especially our parkland, throughout Thunder Bay will continue. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About Us<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TBay Greenspace Preservation came about as a grassroots organization of like-minded Thunder Bay residents who mobilized in an effort to preserve&nbsp;urban greenspaces and parkland. We support urban development in the right places in Thunder Bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our objective was the preservation of three greenspaces, including parkland, that the City of Thunder Bay had targeted for mass development:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>791 Arundel St <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>300 Tokio St <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>144 Fanshaw St<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These three parcels have been sold to Terralux through the City&#8217;s &#8220;Opportunity Sites&#8221; process. Using funding from the federal Housing Accelerator Fund, Terralux is to include some affordable units (10% of the total units) at a maximum monthly rent (as of 2026) of $1660\/month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The City isn&#8217;t stopping at those three parcels. It has an extensive list of other city-owned lands, including parkland, greenspaces, parkettes, and parks throughout Thunder Bay that they plan to surplus and sell off for development. Most recently, City residents learned about a proposed development in Junot Park. Although the proponent withdrew their proposal due to public outcry at building on a beloved park, the City hasn&#8217;t stopped their quest to sell off this park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The City has many parcels of land that would be better suited for development and densification. In fact, the City even commissioned a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thunderbay.ca\/media\/0uggwgfu\/housing-strategy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report <\/a>that provides a list of those parcels. Selling our parkland, greenspaces, parks, and parkettes, although easier and quicker for developers, does not result in a more viable and healthy environment for Thunder Bay to grow into the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Click on the pages above for information on each of the proposed developments.
